A company licensed in the Qatar Financial Centre (QFC) does not file its tax return with the General Tax Authority. It files with the QFC Tax Department, under the QFC Tax Regulations, and the timetable is different from mainland Qatar. Mixing the two up is one of the easiest ways to miss a deadline.
The deadline: six months, not four
A QFC entity files a return for each tax accounting period, no later than six months after that period ends. Any corporation tax due is normally payable by the same date. Your exact filing date is shown in the QFC Client Portal, so check it there rather than counting it yourself.
On the mainland, the GTA deadline is four months after the year end. If your group has a mainland company and a QFC entity, they will have two different dates.
What goes into the filing
A complete QFC filing generally includes:
- the tax return form;
- the accounts for the period covered by the return;
- a tax computation.
The exact documents depend on the type and status of the entity. The QFC Tax Return Completion Guide lists them, and your auditor will normally prepare the accounts and the computation together.
Entities that pay no tax still file
Filing applies to taxable and exempt entities alike, under the rules for each status. A firm that has not started activities is not normally required to file until it becomes active. Once it is active, the yearly return is due even if there is no profit.
Late filing
A late or incomplete return, or late payment, can lead to financial sanctions under the QFC Tax Regulations. If you had a reasonable excuse, you can ask for a penalty to be waived, but only after the outstanding return has been filed, and the decision is at the QFC Tax Department's discretion.
How we can help
Auditment works with companies both on the mainland and in the QFC. We can keep the books, prepare the annual accounts, and handle the tax filing so each entity meets its own deadline. Send us your entity type and year end and we will set out the dates for you.
